Juneteeth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day originated in 1865 in Galveston, Texas. Today, Juneteenth commemorates freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. Birmingham Civil Rights Institute - The Birmingham's Civil Rights Institute's annual Juneteenth Culture Fest is scheduled for June 18, 2016 at Kelly Ingram Park in Birmingham, AL.
Alabama State Proclamation - In 2012, Alabama became the 40th state to recognize Juneteenth as a holiday.
