About Writing Assignments

College writing is expected to be better than work prepared in high school.  Your students will be asked to write summaries, prepare arguments, or develop an interruptive work. By adding just one requirement to written assignment can satisfy one or more Information Fluency competency and proficiency standard.

Exercises Aligned with Standards and Mapped to Learning Outcomes

Writing Assignments

Below are suggestions for exercises mapped to Information Literacy competencies in the context of assignments and exercises requiring students to submit written work.

Require students to:

  • submit an annotated bibliography for preview well in advance of paper/assignment due date; submit initially to a subject librarian in draft form for assessment
  • include resources from a wide variety of sources

Learning Outcomes Introduced and/or Reinforced

Learning Outcome 1:  Students will be able to identify and articulate their information needs in the process of defining a problem, question or project for research.

  • Defines original, concise & focused research topic appropriate to assignment
  • Identifies all types & formats of available sources

Learning Outcome 2:  Students will be able to use library and information technology tools and resources to carry out research.

  • Articulates multiple formats or types of information most likely to answer the information question
  • Uses a wide variety of discipline appropriate methods to retrieve information
  • Accesses multiple library & information technology tools to locate needed information

Learning Outcome 3:  Students will be able to design and execute a research project using a systematic process to collect, analyze and present information in written formats, properly incorporating citing and documenting sources.

  • Creates a high quality, original product to effectively accomplish the planned objective
  • Successfully integrates compiled information, demonstrating proper use of citation and documentation
  • Systematically analyzes & presents quality information in written formats
