Online File Storage

What is online file storage?

Online file storage is a file hosting service based on cloud computing technology, which allows users to upload and save files online and to access these files from different devices/locations over the internet.

Why use online file storage?

1. Easy access

Online file storage tools allow easy access in many ways.

A user can access his files from different devices such as different computers, or his tablet and smartphone. He can also grant access to people he wants to share the files.

2. Large storage space

Usually online file storage tools provide comparatively large space for storage, which can free up some of your computer storage. For example, Dropbox offers 2GB free space at the most basic level; Google Drive (together with Google+) offers 5 GB free space.

3. Collaboration platform

With online file storage tools, you can grant access to your team members or your colleagues/families so you can share certain files with them at certain permission level from "view only" to "managing and editing the files".  At the same time, most of these tools keep different versions of a file so that you can trace back to edits that have been made to the files.

4. Safe and secure

Your files are usually saved safely online because they are backed up on different servers so that they will not be crashed easily.

Although there is a low odds that your files and data will be targeted for theft, online file storage platforms still take security measures seriously. Top online file storage companies encrypt your data even before it's stored in their server using high grade technology that cannot be cracked by any known method. What's more, SSL are used for secure connections which keeps your connection to the storage company secure.

What online file storage tools are available?

There are many online file storage tools available now such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Huddle, etc. Some of them are free to some extent and some of them charge some fee. You are welcome to explore around and find the one works best for you. In this tutorial, we are going to introduce Dropbox. Please feel free to contact us for further questions and/or a workshop.
