Juneteethalso known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day originated in 1865 in Galveston, Texas. Today, Juneteenth commemorates freedom and emphasizes education and achievement.

In 2012, Alabama became the 40th state to recognize Juneteenth as a holiday.

President Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday in June 2021, and thus Alabama Governor Ivey made it a state holiday. Happy Juneteenth!
