Support for Education Doctoral Students: PRAXIS Preparation

The purpose of this guide is to offer ongoing support for students in the Educational Leadership, Policy, & Law program at Alabama State University.

PRAXIS Books @ the LWLC

The LWLC has many different books to help students prepare to take PRAXIS exams. Our newest PRAXIS titles are located at the Information Desk on the 1st floor and may be used inside the library for up to 2 hours at a time. We have several other useful titles that can be checked out in our Curriculum Materials Center. For a list of the new PRAXIS-related titles, please see the titles added in November 2018 (under the New Items @ the LWLC tab).

Praxis: Alabama

Alabama's testing program has been adopted by the Alabama State Board of Education. The Alabama Educator Certification Assessment Program (AECAP) consists of the Praxis® Core Academic Skills for Educators and Praxis Subject Assessments (content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge).

  • Praxis® Core Academic Skills for Educators,
  • Praxis Subject Assessments (content knowledge),
  • Praxis® Principles of Learning and Teaching (pedagogical knowledge), and
  • edTPA® Educative Teacher Performance Assessment (pedagogical knowledge).

Individuals seeking certification in Alabama must successfully complete the current requirements of the AECAP, as applicable.

Individuals seeking to reinstate an Alabama certificate that has lapsed for less than 12 months may choose to successfully complete the current AECAP required Praxis Subject Assessments (content tests) for certificate reinstatement.

All individuals seeking to reinstate an Alabama certificate that has lapsed for more than 12 months must successfully complete the current AECAP required Praxis Subject Assessments (content tests) for certificate reinstatement.

Choose from one of the certification approaches to the left for specific testing requirements.

Important: TEST CHANGES and SCORE INCREASES are effective for tests taken and applications received in the Educator Certification Section on or after September 1, 2018. Information can be viewed in the Educator Assessment Policies.

Visit the Alabama State Department of Education's (ALSDE) website for specific information about the Alabama certification approaches.

Accommodations for Test Takers with Disabilities

ETS is committed to serving test takers with disabilities or health-related needs by providing services and accommodations that are reasonable and appropriate given the purpose of the test. Testing accommodations are available for test takers with disabilities or health-related needs who meet ETS requirements.

Registration Procedures

The Bulletin Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related Needs(PDF) contains procedures for requesting testing accommodations and forms. The Supplement should be used in conjunction with the information in The Praxis®Information Bulletin (PDF).

Note: All test takers requesting any accommodations must register through ETS Disability Services and have their accommodations approved before their test can be scheduled. Your request should be mailed or emailed as early as possible, especially if you are requesting an alternate test format. Documentation review takes approximately six weeks once your request and complete paperwork have been received. If additional documentation must be submitted, it can be another six weeks from the time the new documentation is received until the review is complete. Test takers requesting accommodations cannot register using the online registration system.

Although you must register through ETS Disability Services, you must still create aMy Praxis account to view scores online and order additional score reports.

If you have a health-related need that requires you to bring equipment, beverages, or snacks into the testing room, or to take extra or extended breaks, you must follow the accommodations request procedures in the Bulletin Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related Needs (PDF).

How to Register

  • Review The Praxis® Information Bulletin (PDF) for testing procedures and dates.
  • Complete the Test Authorization Voucher Request Form (PDF).
  • Review the Bulletin Supplement for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related Needs (PDF), complete the required forms and assemble the required eligibility documentation.
  • Submit all forms, documentation and test fees to ETS Disability Services as early as possible, especially if you are requesting an alternate test format. If you prefer to pay online, do not send your payment. You can pay online after your accommodation has been approved.
  • Documentation review takes approximately six weeks once your request and complete paperwork have been received. If additional documentation must be submitted, it can be another six weeks from the time the new documentation is received until the review is complete.
  • Wait for your authorization letter, which will include important scheduling information.
  • Once you receive your authorization letter, schedule your test. Be prepared to provide the authorization/voucher number and the information contained in the letter.

If you need to take a Praxis test outside the United States for employment, certification or entrance into a teacher education program in the United States, please contact the Praxis program at praxis@ets.org. Please be aware that there may not be a test center in your immediate vicinity. We will register you at the center nearest you. In some cases, you may need to make long-distance travel arrangements to get to the nearest test center.
